Genesis 44:1-34 (ESV)
Key Verse: 44:33a
First, Benjamin accused of theft (1-13). Joseph sent his brothers off with their silver and his silver cup in Benjamin's sack. Then he sent his steward to rebuke and arrest them. The brothers offered death to the thief and slavery for the rest. The steward was more lenient: slavery for the thief only. To their great grief, the cup was found in Benjamin's sack. They could've left without Benjamin, but they all went back with him to the governor's house. Though they were framed, Judah said, "God has uncovered your servants' guilt. We are now my lord's slaves..." Joseph said, "No, only the thief (Benjamin) will become my slave."
Second, a surprising sacrificial offer (14-34). Judah had guaranteed Benjamin's safety to his father. In the past, he didn't care about his brother's life or his father's feelings. But now he boldly made a surprising, sacrificial offer: my life for the boy's-let me stay as a slave and please let him return home to his aged father. It showed Judah's deep concern for his father's happiness and his brother's life. Judah's heart had truly changed, for the better.
Prayer: Lord, give me genuine love for others-concern for their feelings and happiness, and respect for their lives. Thank you Jesus, for being our ransom.
One Word: True love cares and sacrifices
