Jacob's Family Moves to Egypt

Date: Jul. 13, 2015

Passage

Genesis 46:1-34  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 46:3a

First, God speaks to Jacob at Beersheba (1-27). Joseph told Jacob to come to Egypt, but was it God's direction? Jacob offered sacrifices to God, and God spoke to him in a night vision. Read verses 2-4. God told him not to be afraid and promised to go with him to Egypt, to make him into a great nation there, and to bring him back. So Jacob took all his children and grandchildren to Egypt--70 persons. This journey had been foretold to Abraham (15:13-16).

Second, Joseph meets his father (28-34). Joseph took his chariot to meet his father Jacob in Goshen. It was a happy, tearful reunion of beloved father and precious son after 22 years apart. Now Jacob felt he was ready to die in peace and joy. Joseph's plan was to ask Pharaoh to let his relatives continue to live as shepherds in Goshen.

Prayer: Lord, help me to know and follow your direction above my own idea or what seems beneficial to me. I want to go or stay wherever you will.

One Word: Follow God's direction and presence
