Daily Bread

The Seed on Good Soil

Date: Jul. 20, 2015

Passage

Matthew 13:18-23  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 13:23

First, the path, rocky ground and thorny soil (18-22). The seed sown along the path represents people whose hearts are too hard to understand God's word. The devil snatches away the word. The seed sown on rocky ground represents people who receive the word quickly. But they just as quickly fall away when trouble or persecution comes. The seed sown on thorny soil represents people who hear the word but worries of life make the seed unfruitful. We ought to examine our heart's response to God's word.

Second, seed on good soil produces a crop (23). Seed that fell on good soil yielded an abundant crop, many more times than what was sown. This represents a person who hears and understands God's word. God's word sown in the good soil of our hearts leads us to faith and trust in him. We will face trouble, persecution and the devil's schemes but Jesus promises to produce fruit in our lives when we hold to God's promises.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for the good seed of your word. Please sow your word in the good soil of my heart.

One Word: Seed in good soil produces a crop
