Daily Bread

You Were Bought at a Price

Date: Aug. 22, 2015

Passage

1 Corinthians 6:12-20  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 6:19b-20

First, your bodies are members of Christ himself (12-17). Christ died to free us from the power of the law. Then how can we use our freedom? We should not use our freedom to give ourselves over to another master. Christ did not free us so that we could be ruled by desires for food, sex or anything else. He died in order to make us united with him who was raised from the dead. Christ died so that we, who were separated from God by the power of sin, might become members of Christ himself. We should use our freedom to offer our bodies to Christ.

Second, you are not your own (18-20). Paul teaches the spiritual truth of what sexual immorality is, and why it is a sin. Christ shed his precious blood to make us new. Our bodies are a temple of the indwelling Spirit, which God poured out as a free gift for his children. But the free gift came at a price. We are not our own; we belong to God, bought at the price of the death of his Son. When we offer our bodies to sin we reject this truth; when we offer our bodies to God we honor him, and we honor the one who bought us at the cost of his life.

Prayer: Lord, thank you for Jesus, who died for me. Help me to honor you with my body.

One Word: Honor God with your body
