Prophecy Fulfilled

Date: Nov. 29, 2015

Passage

Matthew 26:31-56  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 26:56

First, Peter's arrogance (31-35). Peter and his disciples did not yet know that the only way to enter God's kingdom is as an impoverished beggar, spiritually. Aside from the Holy Spirit, we can do nothing of value, nothing meaningful.

Second, in Gethsemane (36-46). In the deeply moving account we see Jesus, "made a littler lower than the angels," struggling for the first time with his will vs the Father's will. Did this struggle catch him by surprise? Or was he overwhelmed that he would soon bear the wrath of God for the sin of the world? Or perhaps he was not sure he could, as the Son of Man, make it through not only the crucifixion but especially the immeasurable anguish of separation from his Father. Regardless, our hearts are moved to see him pleading with the disciples to be with him this most difficult hour, and imploring God the Father to find another way.

Third, Jesus' arrest (47-56). Like a play in a heavenly playbook, all these events took place according to God's plan, recorded by the prophets.

Prayer: Lord, grant that during our most difficult hours, we, like Jesus, may earnestly pray without ceasing.

One Word: In temptation, pray without ceasing
