Let Your Light and Truth Guide Me

Date: Dec. 8, 2015

Passage

Psalm 43:1-5  (ESV)

  Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause
    against an ungodly people,
  from the deceitful and unjust man
    deliver me!
  For you are the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you rejected me?
  Why do I go about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?
  Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
  let them bring me to your holy hill
    and to your dwelling!
  Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
  and I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.
  Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
  Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Key Verse: 43:3

  Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
  let them bring me to your holy hill
    and to your dwelling!

First, you are God my stronghold (1-3). Living among an ungodly nation full of wicked men, the psalmist felt as if God rejected him. He went about mourning, oppressed by the enemy. What could/should he do? He turned to God for help. He asked God to send forth the light and truth and let them guide him. When we live in this dark world in great distress, we have no hope. But when we turn to God and go back to the word of God, Jesus the light and truth guides us and saves us again.

Second, God is my joy and my delight (4-5). By the guidance of the light and truth the psalmist went to the altar of God where Jesus' blood was shed. Through his sacrifice on the altar we can have new joy and delight. When our downcast soul puts hope in God, we can praise God our Savior.

Prayer: Lord, in this dark world you are the light and the truth. You are my joy and my delight through your blood on God's altar.

One Word: My soul, why are you downcast? Put your hope in God!
