Mark 2:18-28 (ESV)
Key Verse: 2:28
First, new wineskins (18-22). Jesus never asked his disciples to fast. Disciples of the Pharisees and even of John the Baptist fasted regularly. When questioned about this, Jesus answered in two ways. Firstly, Jesus is the bridegroom. Guests don't fast when the bridegroom is with them. But when he leaves them, they will fast. Secondly, Jesus' disciples are the unshrunk cloth and the new wineskins. They cannot be made to be confined in the old religious order. Jesus' disciples are the new wineskins, made to hold the new gospel.
Second, Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath (23-28). Jesus' disciples were criticized for breaking the law of the Sabbath when they picked some grain to eat. Jesus answered the accusation with what David did. Did he break the Law when he and his companions ate the consecrated bread? Technically, yes. But Jesus rebuked their legalism through this reminder of David. God is not a god of legalism, but of love and compassion. He did not make the Sabbath to be a burden to us, but to give us rest in Him. The Sabbath is not lord over us, but Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be like a new wineskin. May Jesus be my Lord.
One Word: We are new wineskins!
