Leviticus 4:1-35 (ESV)
Key Verse: 4:31b
First, unintentional sins of priest and community (1-21). The sin (or purification) offering was not voluntary (optional) but mandatory. It was for unintentional sin, when one realized their sin against God's commands. God is holy. Sin is sin even when we don't realize it. Priest or community sin required a more costly bull. The blood of a defectless bull played a major part in forgiveness of sin. Also, the bull had to be burned outside the camp. Jesus, though he was without sin, became our sin offering (2Co 5:21). He himself bore our sin and disgrace when he was crucified outside Jerusalem (Heb 13:12-13; 1Pe 2:24).
Second, unintentional sins of leaders and common persons (22-35). A defectless goat was sacrificed for a leader or common person who sinned unintentionally and realized it later. These sin offerings were made at the tent of meeting by the priest. This was how the holy God required his people to be forgiven.
Prayer: Lord, my sins are surely more and greater than I realize, both intentional and unintentional. Save me from all my sin by Jesus' precious blood. May my life bring thanks and praise to my Savior Jesus.
One Word: He who knew no sin became sin for us
Revelation 21:1-8
