Realizing Sins

Date: May. 5, 2016

Passage

Leviticus 5:1-13  (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 5:13a

Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin which he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the grain offering.”

First, becoming aware of sin (1-6). Here are 4 examples of unintentional that required a sin offering: (1) failing to testify about witnessed sin, (2) touching unclean carcasses, (3) touching human uncleanness, and (4) making careless oaths. These are personal, secret matters. No one else knows. But God knows and sees and this sin defiles the whole community and makes one unclean and guilty. That person must confess and bring a female lamb or goat as a sin offering to the priest to make atonement for sin.

Second, provisions for the poor (7-13). Poor people who could not afford a lamb could bring two doves or pigeons for a sin offering and burnt offering. Very poor people could bring two quarts of fine flour, part of which the priest burned and the rest the priest could eat. These were the prescribed sin offerings to make atonement so the people could be forgiven.

Prayer: Lord, my sins are many, both known and unknown. Thank you for Jesus, the Lamb and Great High Priest whose blood takes away all our sin and cleanses our consciences so we can serve God.

One Word: Forgiven in God's prescribed way
