Daily Bread

Atonement and Cleansing

Date: May. 17, 2016

Passage

Leviticus 13:47-14:32 (ESV)

Daily Bread

Key Verse: 14:31b

one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering, along with a grain offering. And the priest shall make atonement before the LORD for him who is being cleansed.

First, regulations about mold (13:47-59). Mildew or mold in clothing or leather was another form of uncleanness. The priest had to decide what needed to be washed, cut out or burned. This prevented the spread of the mold. Mold is unwholesome and unhealthy. May we examine our lives and remove impurities by God's grace (1 Th4:3-7).

Second, cleansing from skin diseases (14:1-32). Much had to be done to restore a diseased person to God and community: a bird was killed, a bird set free to the wild; the person had to shave all their hair, bathe and wash their clothes; on the 8th day they presented 3 defectless lambs for guilt, sin and burnt offerings, plus a grain offering. The poor could replace two lambs with two doves and a smaller grain offering. All this supported the priest. Above all, this restored the diseased person to God and to the community as clean again. Faith and devotion to Christ now cleanses us (Heb 10:22; 1Jn 1:7).

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank you for restoring me to God and community as clean through your shed blood.

One Word: Atoned for and cleansed through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
