1. The Lord gives Saul into David's hands (1-7)
Once again, Saul received a tip about David's location, and he came after David with an army of 3000 men. Saul stopped in a cave to relieve himself, not realizing that David and his men were in the back. David and his men understood God's purpose in this event very differently. David's men thought this was his God-given chance to destroy his enemy. But David stood firm on the principle of not taking revenge with his own hands. David set a precedent for all godly leaders to follow.
2. Saul admits God's righteousness (8-22)
David pleaded with Saul to understand that he had no desire to kill him. Saul was moved by David's merciful action; he wept, and confessed the truth he knew in his heart-David would be the next king, and God would establish his kingdom. The Lord honors those who honor him (2:30).
Prayer: Lord, help me not interpret events according to my selfish desire, but stand on godly principles no matter what.
One Word: Do not take revenge
