God Judges Through Jesus Christ

Date: Feb. 24, 2023

Passage

Romans 2:6-16 (ESV)

He will render to each one according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

12 For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. 14 For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them 16 on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

Key Verse: 2:16

on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

God is the judge of us all. What is his standard of judgment? He will give to each of us according to what we have done. If we seek God wholeheartedly by seeking his glory and honor, we will receive eternal life. But if we are self-seeking, refusing to glorify God nor giving thanks to him, God will give us his wrath and anger. Paul points out here that there are two types of people: those who do evil and those who do good. Those who do evil are condemned. Those who do good will receive God’s glory, honor, and peace. This applies to Jews and Gentiles both.

No one is righteous (3:10). But we can be declared righteous by God when we obey his word. Just hearing the word of God doesn’t make us righteous. We need to put it into practice. The Jews had God’s word through the law. But they didn’t obey. The Gentiles didn’t have God’s word, yet they too were under judgment, because God had written the requirements of his law on their hearts. So, they were without excuse. Therefore, God judges all people through Jesus Christ. Whoever believes in him will be saved. But whoever does not believe will be condemned.

Prayer: Prayer: Father, we either sin under the law or apart from the Law, and you judge us all. Thank you that you save us all through Jesus Christ our Lord.

One Word: One Word: God saves us through Jesus Christ
